Why You Need This

Learning how to properly dice an onion is one of the easiest ways to level up your cooking skills. With a little bit of practice, you should be able to cut an onion in under 2 minutes. Ideally, each piece of onion ends up similar in size so that they cook at the same speed. This trick helps you get a great result every time, and looks pretty impressive too!

Tools Needed

This super easy kitchen hack uses items you already have! All you need is:

  • Knife
  • Cutting Board

How to Dice an Onion

Step 1) Cut the onion in half

Step 2) Cut off one end of the onion, leaving the root end intact.  Peel off the skin. It’s okay to take off the outside layer of the onion as well.

Step 3) Place half onion cut-side down on a cutting board

Step 4) Make vertical cuts about ¼ inch apart through the onion, stopping just short of the root.

Step 5) Slice downward across the previous cuts to dice

How Else Can I Use This?

Of course, this method can be used on red, yellow, or white onions. It can even be used to cut garlic and shallots as well. To do this, just add a a step between steps 3 and 4 above where you cut horizontally (parallel to the cutting board). This will help ensure you can a quick, evenly sized dice every time.
